Overnight oats in a jar – a beautiful picture or a healthy and fast breakfast?
It all depends on how it is properly cooked. On the Internet you can find a lot of bright pictures of this recipe, accompanying fitness articles or publications about weight loss. But for some reason, in half of the photos, we see a layer of dry oatmeal, which then will have to nibble, and there’s not a word about mixing products. You don’t have to do that, and today I will show you the correct step-by-step recipe for preparing this dish.
Overnight oats is a really quick recipe, because you only need to mix all the ingredients in one dish. But let’s discuss what’s best to mix. Today I will use homemade yogurt, oatmeal and berries. If you want you can cook without yogurt, replacing it with kefir.
In the future I will prepare a selection of the best combinations of filling for oatmeal in the jar, but today I want to focus on the berry option, as I consider it the most delicious.
Thoughts out loud
In the recipe for homemade yogurt I wrote down its pluses, but I’ll walk through them briefly. It contains no additives, flavors or thickeners. We also control the cooking and storage process.
Try to use oatmeal that is not fast brewed. Rapid porridge contains more carbohydrates and less fiber, so it is not as useful. The last ingredient I have is berries. Here the fantasy can walk as long as it wants. Choose berries depending on your region, season, availability in the store or refrigerator.
I have berries available all year round, as I make preparations from summer and store them in the freezer. In this recipe, oatmeal in a jar will be with seedless cherries, blueberries and bog blueberries. It is better to defrost all the berries in advance.
We start to put the food in a jar. You can also use a plate, saucepan, glass and other dishes. The jar just turned out to be the most photogenic, so this recipe has spread so widely.
Ingredients are added in the following proportions: half of the volume – yogurt, 15% – oatmeal, 35% – berries. To begin with, pour a little yogurt, then alternate oatmeal, yogurt, berries and again yogurt.
I try to do it this way, because when stirring all the ingredients will be evenly distributed, and there will be no dry flakes or berries in the corners of the jar. If you have done everything correctly, you can already take photos and put them in Instagram. This is the version of lazy oatmeal you see in most cases on the Internet.
But we want to eat it, so we mix all the ingredients well and put them in the fridge overnight. By the way, one of the names of this recipe is night oatmeal. This is due to the fact that oatmeal is accepted and is best eaten for breakfast, and for a full cooking is enough 1 night, which is very convenient.
In the morning, for breakfast, we get a beautiful, fragrant and delicious yogurt – an analogue of store fruit yogurt with cereals.
Depending on your needs, you can adjust the volume of the jar to cook exactly as much as you can eat in one meal.
By the way, many people write flattering reviews of lazy oatmeal because of its usefulness for weight loss. But it depends not only on the dish itself, but also on the human diet in general. In my personal opinion, this is one of the most delicious and healthy diet recipes, which is present in my diet.
Bon appetit! Don’t starve 😋
